Hands and Feet - Yoga & The Art of Equilibrium
NEW CLASS:
Joni Yecalsik Level III Mondays at 7:30 AM
NEW CLASS TIME &
LEVEL:
Debby Green's BACKCARE class is now at 10 AM and is no longer "Basics"
Class Descriptions:
Back Care
For all types of back problems, pain and postural problems including
scoliosis. Come lengthen your spine and move out of the habitual
behaviors that are making your back hurt! All levels welcome including
those new to yoga and beginners.
Yoga & Scoliosis
For students with a lateral curvature(s) of the spine. The focus
is on extension and working with issues affecting people with scoliosis
such as balance, proprioception, strength and reducing compensatory
patterns. All levels welcome including those new to yoga.
Yoga & Scoliosis Level II
For students with mature yoga practice or who have been taking the
Yoga & Scoliosis class on a regular basis for a minimum of 1
year. We will be working with prescriptive sequences given by the
Iyengars and others to people with scoliosis. Our first sequence
will be taken from BKS Iyengars sequence in Light On Yoga.
All poses will be modified with props and awareness techniques so
each can move ahead in the sequence. There will also be a focus
on inversions practice.
Yoga & Scoliosis for Teens & Tweens
For ages 11-17. All teens welcome, but as idiopathic scoliosis is
so common in these years the class will generally focus on scoliosis.
This 1-hour class creates an environment that is less intense than
the adult classes and is sequenced for a young persons energy
level. Classes are sold as a 4 week $60 series.
This Semesters
2nd series: April 1-22 on Tuesdays at 4:30-5:30 with Alison and
April 2-23 on Wednesdays 4-5 PM with Deborah.
Yoga & Scoliosis
for Students with Harrington Rods & Other Surgical Fusions
Because of the contraindications with Harrington Rods and other
instrumentation, being in a general classeven one focused
on scoliosis or back problemscan be frustrating. This class
covers all the principles and poses of the Yoga & Scoliosis
classes but without twists, convex forward bending, backbending.
The practice will help strengthen muscles around the fusion in an
aligned manner, bring stability to hypermobile joints or open up
very stiff areaswithout destabilizing the body or the instrumentation
itself.
Asymmetry
This class is for students of all levels and does not concentrate
on back problems or necessarily scoliosis. Through the study of
our asymmetries we can find where our practice is weak and where
we are prone to injury and strain. Through self-observation, observation
of others, use of props and imagery we can move deeper into the
body/mind and into yoga practice.
Level III
For students with substantial Alignment-based yoga training who
are strong in standing postures, can do Sirsasana (headstand) with
confidence for five minutes (barring a cervical problem), and can
push up into Urdhva Dhanurasana. Sirsasana variations, intermediate
postures, and seated pranayama are taught. Independent practice
should be well established. Open to transitioning Level II students.
Yoga Union Intermediate Classes are alignment- and breath-based
classes for students who practice at an intermediate level and up,
meaning; standing poses, inversions and backbends. The morning classes
are particularly suited to teachers and more advanced practitioners.
These are not therapeutic backcare classes.
Yoga Union Lunchtime Basics
These classes are suitable for all students to develop a knowledge
of the fundamentals of alignment and to master the basics of the
foundation poses.
